A Good Ol' Pub Lunch

Magpie Pub

With a lot on the schedule this Saturday, we decided to kill a number of birds with one stone. Heading down to Liverpool Street anyway, we decided to work away from home for a change and see what hidden treasures the city had to offer.

Hungry, tired and slightly pushed for time females makes a seriously unproductive combination so we had to find somewhere ... Fast!

Camomile Tea
Making our way silently (hunger inhibits conversation), we stumbled across a pub, Magpie Pub.

Thrown into the iconic British culture, this pub was full of ‘jack the lads’, drinking beer, eating peanuts and playing the slot machine. Pause. Please lets take a moment to appreciate that it was just shy of midday and most of these men were Already drunk.

After setting ourselves up in the corner we took a look at the menu. When Jamelia went to place her order she was pleasantly surprised by how cheerful, upbeat, casual and honest the waitress was. To be honest the pub had barely any of the drinks we requested in stock, but the bar tender did bend over backwards to ensure that we got the next best thing.

Although they had no sugar available for Candace's tea, the waitress instead offered her personal honey she’d brought into work that day. Hows that for service? The camomile tea was standard and after some confusion Jamelia enjoyed her slightly too sweet orange juice.

Fish burger & chips
Mains
For lunch, we both decided to keep it simple so Jamelia had a fish sandwich and chips and Candace, chicken and mushroom pie and chips. After constant chuckling at the conversations of the drunken punters, our food arrived.

Jamelia’s fish sandwich was not what she expected. It was literally a no thrills fish - sandwich, very dry, but filled the gap - on the other hand the chips were delicious.

Candace's Chicken and Mushroom Pie was hot and fresh with just enough crisp on the lid. It was deeply filled and coated with thick, moist pastry. Accompanied by some chunky skin on fries as well, the crunchy outside and light hot potato made for a hearty filling lunch.

Dessert
Candace ordered dessert alone this time but the chocolate brownie and vanilla ice cream dessert was definitely something to be shared and how glad was she to share it. The rich chocolate sauce coated the warm crunchy coated brownie. The vanilla ice cream was the perfect match (as usual!) Clearly there is a running theme with dessert choices, we’ll try to order something different next time.

An amusing start to the afternoon and one we think all should experience.
