Time Flies When You're Having Fun!

We cannot believe it has been a whole year since we started sharing our dining experiences with you, in order to save you the hassle of finding great places to dine in the capital. We’ve also used it as another creative outlet for ourselves, and a time to further develop our sisterly bond… any excuse to eat out really!

As if perfectly timed, on the run up to our 1st birthday, we were invited by Jemma Regis ‘Jemz”, Founder of Jemz Cake Box herself to taste an array of her wonderful delicacies  - her infamous cakes!

Right to left: Guiness Cake,
Victoria Sponge, Banoffee Cake
Lime and Coconut Drizzle,
Red Velvet, Carrot Cake,
Jam Donuts.
First up was the Lime and Coconut Drizzle. An adventurous slant on the ordinary sponge cake, this Jemz special has a rich middle filling implicative of the traditional Victoria Sponge however the strawberry jam is traded out for a lime and coconut cream. Authentic to its name, both the lime and coconut flavours are very present and marry perfectly. Drizzled in icing, this glaze gave every bite a light crunch and a moreish tendency, a very mature and refreshing start to the tea party.

Banoffee Cake
Our pallet had now been cleaned perfectly, ready for our second treat - Banoffee Cake. Neither of us are great fans of Banoffee. Jamelia isn’t too fussed about the use of fruit/ strong fruit flavours in desserts. On the flip side, Candace has grown to love banana cake however is not really a fan of caramel (tough crowd!). This being said, true to cake dates throwing our assumptions of out the window and changing the game, this cake was a definite crowd pleaser. Delicately decorated, the toffee caramel and buttercream swirling on the top balanced the rich banana taste, satisfying both pallets.
Victoria Sponge
Now onto an iconic delicacy, Victoria Sponge. Super girly, bright pink buttercream icing introduced a moist vanilla sponge sandwiching a rich jam filing, this sweet addition was Jamelia’s favourite. Sometimes Victoria Sponges can have too rich a filling and combined with icing on top - can someone say sugar overload? Jemz took a risk here and I must say it paid off. Perfect simplicity. For birthdays for young children, or for a girly occasion such as a hen do we would most certainly recommend this cake.

Red Velvet
A 21st century favourite followed, Red Velvet. We have both tried this speciality from Jemz on a number of occasions and it does not take much for us to convince us that just because it’s the weekend, ordering a red velvet cake makes sense. Jemz is personally not fan of red velvet but like any true chef, she understands the flavours and samples along the baking process. The best part of this cake really is the cream cheese, the fluffiness of it vs the sharp flavours in the cake itself merge so harmoniously, it actually makes us start dancing while we are eating it. Cheeky fact – did you know beetroot and white wine vinegar are the elements that keep the red colour sharp? It’s interesting because if someone told us we’d be eating a cake with white wine vinegar, cream cheese, beetroot, and chocolate, we’d tell them “have a seat.” And might we add we are yet to taste a red velvet cake that tops this one. Yes, that means it is better than Hummingbird.

Ok half way through now. At this point, we genuinely felt slumped and desperately needed a drink. With water, juice, Shloer (the adult soft drink), and wine at our disposal, we took a moment to take it all in.

Carrot Cake
After the break, we got straight into the Carrot Cake. A new favourite for Candace and Jemz version reconfirmed why she now loves it so much. Each slice was incredibly moist topped with perfectly whipped cream cheese. Filled with walnuts, currants and pineapple, our mouths are watering just talking about it!

Next, Chocolate gnash – wowzer! Imagine a sandwich with chocolate cake as the bread, and with a chocolate brownie as the filling. I know right! This nut filled, chocolate cake & brownie sandwich delight is certainly not for the faint hearted. The richness mainly came from the gnash topping which was so dreamy. Are we the only ones who close our eyes when we eat?

Ever tasted homemade Donuts? Krispy Kreme eat your heart out. Filled with strawberry jam and generously dusted in sugar, the warm donut was a serious melt in the mouth situation.
Chocolate Guiness
As the saying goes, let’s leave the best until last. This cake is the ultimate home run, cherry on top, chart topper no.1 Chocolate Guiness. We know you are thinking chocolate and guiness in a cake, how can that possibly taste remotely flavoursome? Let us be the first to tell you that tasting this cake creates a life long memory and begins a life long relationship. One of Jemz signature cakes, perfect for major milestones e.g. birthdays or anniversaries - or in our case to satisfy a serious chocolate craving ;).

Jemz Cake Box delivers with each and every variety of cake. Although this was an exclusive tasting, do not just take our word for it! Have a look for yourself ;): http://jemzcakebox.com
