Disclaimer (if you didn’t already know) New York is a dope city! There’s so much to do, interesting people to meet, places to visit and most importantly places to eat! Having spent the summer there, we thought we'd put together foodie guide including some of our favourite places to help navigate your taste buds through the concrete jungle! It's a fast paced, forever changing and innovating city so whilst this list is inclusive of some of our favourites, we have previously shared others in our other posts.

Soco.

509 Myrtle Ave, Brooklyn,
NY 11205,
United States

Kicking things off with Soco. A Brooklyn Soulfood shack, which prides itself on its unique mix of southern fused cuisine with flairs of Cajun/Crele, and barbecue food.

This ambience is set by soul and R&B classics playing in the background with images of Biggie and other Brooklyn great on the walls. Soco is a great venue for less formal birthdays, causal meet ups and dates nights. Another very important thing to note is that the cocktails are The Bomb!

I had the Blackened Salmon, Mashed Yams, Garlic Tossed String Beans with of course a side of macaroni and cheese which could easily serve three people.

Was this the best SoulFood in New York? No, and it doesn't intend to be. The menu offers a unique blend of flavours with generous portions, a buzzing vibe which lends itself to the restaurant doubling itself up as a bar in the evening.
Good food, great drinks, friendly staff although location wise a little hard to get to, requiring a lengthy walk from the subway station or requiring you to take a bus which stops outside, but may be a little daunting for a first timer!

Amy Ruths.

113 W 116th St, New York,
NY 10026,
United States
Another Harlem favourite, which is slightly to closer to the city (116th St on the 2 or 3 Train Red Line) is Amy Ruth’s. This soul food spot is similar to Sylvia’s however slightly more casual, with a more flexible menu and overall lower price point.

We have yet to visit New York and not found our way back to Amy Ruth’s, it truly optimizes the term ‘home away from home’. I opted for the Fried Catfish and Waffles and at an extremely reasonable $17.95 and Chicken and Waffles for as low as $14.95!

With historically named dishes and now open 24 hours Fridays and Saturdays (literally winner winner chicken dinner!), we would recommend this place if you are out an about and need to grab a quick bite or want to spend those spare dollars in your purses.

Was the catfish here better than Sylvias? No, but it was enjoyable and filling nonetheless!

Sons of Essex.

133 Essex St, New York,
NY 10002,
United States

All about that Brunch!

Now, if you are in NY with your girlfriends/friends this is the place for you! A vintage, dimly lit, quirky brunch spot by day, and bar by night - Sons of Essex is simply too cool.

Comparable to bars in Shoreditch, East London; Sons of Essex is located in the Lower East Side, close to the 'BottomLess Brunch Spot' we have previously reviewed. Unfortunately the Saturday I visited there were no Bottomless drinks however word on the street is that if you time it right, they do have these brunches and they are great!

Not necessarily a cheapie, but definitely a goodie the food here tastes fresh, light and flavoursome. Their Buttermilk Pancakes ($14), are undoubtedly the best pancakes I tasted whilst in NYC.
Although the DJ creates such a vibe, especially on a summers day, you MUST be over 21 to get in, whether you intend to drink or not. The door staff can be blunt, rude and unapologetic if you are not so make sure you have I.D.

Bubba Gump.

1501 Broadway, New York,
NY 10036, United States

Of course, we could not visit New York and not go to one of our spots - Bubba Gump. Peep our review of the London location here.

Located in the heart of Times Square, this is certainly one to visit on either your first r last day when you are still exploring and adjusting to the pace of New York City.

Coldstones

253 W 42nd St, New York,
NY 10036,
United States

Gurrrrllll - you have not tasted ice cream until you've visited Cold Stones in Times Square, "Real friends don't let friends eat grocery store ice cream".
Flavour choices galore, once you’ve chosen they are happy to kneed any additional ingredients you want in it, literally kneading in brownies, oreos, nuts, jelly suits..anything!
Their Milk and Cookies milkshake is definitely a fave but honestly, anything from this place is promised to satisfy!

Again, located in Times Square if you are eating in the area do yourself a favour and save space for dessert and swing by here. The staff here are young and fun and on your way out, drop them a tip and watch what happens!

WOM Rating: 4/5 (would be 5 if they had seating)

Harlem Fish Market.

684 St Nicholas Ave,
New York, NY 10030,
United States

We can honestly say we would have never discovered nor tried this spot had it not been for a personal recommendion. So this is us paying it forward...

Do yourself a favour and visit the very casual Famous Fish Market. The staff are lovely and they offer a free sample of their fried fish and shrimp when you let them know it is your first time visiting now how’s that for customer service!

Fish Sandwiches prices $6-$8 you can get a full meal here for $10 with lemonade and Ice Tea priced at $2. Although it’s not a spot to take your date, dress up or eat in, if you are not in the area this place is well worth the trip and is rated for the best 'Fish & Chips' in New York.

Fish Sandwiches are priced between $6-$8, with a full meal costing $10 with lemonade and Iced Tea priced at an additional $2. Even if you are not in the area this place is well worth the trip and is rated for the best 'Fish & Chips' in New York. Go visit! Of course I had the fish sandwich with a homemade lemonade - delish!

Harlem Shake.

100 W 124th St, New York,
NY 10027,
United States

Harlem is definitely the place for great, reasonable food as we're sure you've noticed.

Easily one of the best Oreo Milkshakes I have ever tasted, and a mean grilled cheese sandwich. Drop by this retro diner in the heart of Harlem, a short walk from Sylvias, we can guarantee you good food and a buzzing environment. This place is definitely a throw back!

The Door

163-07 Baisley Blvd,
Jamaica, NY 11434,
United States

Moving away from the ‘faster food’ alternatives, The Door serves the best Caribbean food in New York hands down!

Whist their take out system is comparable to a wild game of bingo, unpredictable and for organisation freaks a true nightmare; their dining service and menu is second to none. Authentic Caribbean service with a smile, complimentary soup or salad and a generous alcohol to juice cocktail ratio.

I would personally recommend the brown stew fish dish which is served with a choice of rice or rice and peas, of course along side my fave macaroni and cheese. The portions are enough to eat until your stomach is content and continue the party in your mouth once you get home. This place is a keeper. Kudos to my cousins for informing me of it!

It's not the easiest restaurant to access as it is in Queens and not near any subway stations but if you drive, are up for a relaxing can journey, or want to experience New York in its entirety, public transport and all, there is a bus which stops right outside.

Well we can't imagine you going hungry for at least a week with those options; so until next week..
