Sunday Nights at the Shard

The Shard
32 London Bridge St
SE1 9SG

As 2015 was drawing to a close, it was time for another meet up with my bookclub girls, to review our 2015 achievements and stretch ourselves with 2016 goals.

On Sunday evening, we headed to Oblix Lounge and Bar on the 32 floor of The Shard.
Wait - we know what you're thinking.. with The Shard famous for its panoramic views of London, being the tallest building in London and home to the Shangri-La Hotel charing £1000+ per night for a room - the lounge must charge a fortune to eat. Wrong!

Oblix is only as expensive as you want it to be. With mains from as little as £21 the choice really is yours with regard to how much you choose to eat and therefore pay. On this particular occasion we were celebrating so opted for starters to share, a main, a dessert and a cocktail totalling £62per person.

The wow factor immediately hits you, upon approach to the building. Its mere stature is breathtaking. Once inside the building you are directed to the lift with only one option - 32nd Floor. The speed of the lift is enough to make your ears pop, and once out, you are greeted by very pleasant staff who direct you to your table.

The atmosphere of the lounge itself is everything, it is dimly lit and seductive; an exceptional choice for a date night. We were sat on rounded lounge chairs with low tables. From your seat you are able to admire the view of the city and the unique collection of aged wines next to the bar.

Staff were very attentive with offering cocktails/wines whilst we decided what to eat.. We opted for the “Rum Hula Hula” cocktail which was to die for! Served in a very interesting cup and made with a unique blend of caramel, pineapple and a few other secret ingredients; it was like nothing I’d ever tasted before.

The waitress taking food orders, wasn't so pleasant but never mind, we were in a beautiful venue having a great time, with even better company. Between us we opted for : The warm artisan olive and basil bread with farmhouse butter (£3.50 (V)) and Crispy squid, chilli & lime (£8.00) for starters. The bread was pretty mediocre - but how good can bread really be? But the squid was deliciously seasoned and crunchy.

For mains, I opted for Sea bass, fennel & olives (£21), Macaroni & cheese (£6.50 (V)) and went all out with dessert Pecan nut & chocolate bar, crunchy bourbon ice cream (£9.50).

The Sea bass was pretty simple, but the Macaroni & cheese was the key player of the meal! Topped with breadcrumbs, not too cheesy but creamy, it was delicious and enough to share for two.

Above anything else, I would recommend visiting the Oblix Lounge simply for the Shard Experience. Its not necessarily cheap but definitely cheerful… go on treat yourself and a loved one ;)
