Who remembers the days when TGI Fridays was the place to be? Its affordably priced American diner experience with quirky waiting staff had us feeling like it was Friday everyday. Then times changed. More diners opened and the market became rather saturated, its popularity dropped as did the standard of their food. Lets just say, it looks like Bubba Gump Shrimp Co picked up where TGI’s somewhat fell off…

If you follow us on Twitter, no doubt your timeline would have been flooded with images and outbursts of excitement expressing just how impressed we were by our trip to Bubba Gump Shrimp Co.

At 7.30pm on a Tuesday evening, we struggled to enter the entrance of the newly opened
American chain due to the influx of tourists in the lobby area. As you enter the restaurant, you are immersed into a Forrest Gump playground, peppered with recognisable merchandise from the film. The waitress at the door was full of energy, bursting with excitement and was keen to get us seated upstairs as soon as possible. We overheard that the average waiting time was 45 minutes and usually Bubba Gump do not take bookings but you know us, when there’s a will, there’s a way.

Mango Mojito
Bubba Gump is the ultimate ‘SeaFood Lovers Paradise’ with choice in abundance; and with pescatarians continually limited to 3 fish options on a standard menu, Bubba Gump surely saved the day.

Drinks
Cocktails on a Tuesday isn’t against the rules is it? Jamelia initially went for Lava Flow And Candace Mamas Favourite. The waitress soon returned with bad news, neither cocktail was available. Not the best start, but you can’t stay mad. So we simply chose another option from the ping pong board flip menu -  Mango Mojitos. For our second choice, we were surprisingly impressed.

Best Ever Popcorn Shrimp

Starters

Choices, choices, choices! Candace was immediately driven to the Cajun Shrimp whilst Jamelia was left unsure and understandably; never before had she been so spoilt for choice! Eventually, she opted for the Best Ever Popcorn Shrimp, can't go wrong right? CORRECT!  The Best Ever Popcorn Shrimp was just what Jamelia needed to start things off; battered flavoursome shrimps alongside battered peppers and other treats - it was precisely what it said on the label.

Cajun Shrimp

Candaces' Cajun shrimp dish was prepared in literally 2 minutes, and Jamelia got offered one before the entire dish was entirely cleared - speaks for itself really! (Sorry Jam)

Dixie Fishwich
Mains
After 15 minutes of deliberation, Jamelia decided on the Dixie Fishwich – a southern fried Fish Sandwich with Louisiana Special Sauce and Pepper Jack Cheese; a dish totally beyond Jamelia's wildest expectations.
Shrimpers Heaven

Usually Fish Sandwiches are sloppy excuses for flimsy tasteless fish fingers trapped in overside buns. This ‘Fishwich’ however was honestly so big and so filling Jamelia had to question whether it was fish or chicken (with Candace as the second judge). The Fishwich paired with thin fries was a perfect choice, filling, full of flavour and 100% fish!

Candace opted for the Shrimpers Heaven and you can see why! An assortment of  tempura, coconut and chilled peel and eat shrimp with a portion of thin fries. This dish is truly a crowd pleaser and depicted the versatility of shrimp; as for portion sizes? All American!

Desserts
Chocolate Brownie
We had to go in for the final lap this time and we, of course, we both opted for the Alabama brownie (low key, we are still on a hunt to taste London’s best). The brownie came warm with vanilla ice cream. The greed overtook us and neither of us could get through even half of, what tasted more like, a chocolate fudge cake. With a heavy dark chocolate presence, Chicken Shop is still in the lead.

Overall Experience
This evening was definitely a stand out of our foodie journey so far, the charismatic staff, booth style dining, and impromptu mid meal visit from the manager; all combined, made for a personal dining experience that transported us back home.

For those who are not crazy about seafood, there are a few meat options but you’ll definitely be in the minority – oh, how the tables have turned.
