A British Classic

Another wet, windy and worriedly cold day in the capital calls for one type of cuisine - COMFORT FOOD. Britain is iconic for its dishes dunked in oil or buried in butter before it hits the china. As well as this, when the temperature is at a high of 2 degrees, a light dinner just won’t suffice. So what better than a good ol’  fish and chips to seal the deal?

We must admit, this british classic is definitely in our top 5 favourite cuisines however, there are only very few places that get it very right; always go on recommendation and avoid those chinese restaurants that do fish and chips too – dogdy mate!

Mains
Poppie’s Fish and Chips definitely sets the bar high for authentic and reasonably priced grub with portion sizes how they should be, and used to be before the recession. Usually Candace goes for a standard cod and chips but on this occasion, decided to push the boat out a little and have haddock instead.

Within 10 minutes of drinks arriving, the main was presented - a grand piece of beer battered haddock with fat chips chilling in the corner of the plate. The Chips served at Poppies are very rare to find. Fat chips, soft inside, with the occasional crunch. On the go these are served in newspaper like printed wrapping, when dining in you are offered a very generous serving.

Unlike cod, haddock has an innate smoked flavour which invites a sense of aroma to what is naturally, seasoning wise, a very ‘blah’ dish. Jamelia's order of Cod, on the flip side, was not the most exciting. This was to be expected, nonetheless, the crispy batter was tasty and sprinkled with a fair share of vinegar and salt - she was good to go.
The drinks menu is also pretty straight forward with your usual suspects fizzy drinks, tea and coffee and after feeling overwhelmed with guilt, again dessert was a no show.

Overall Experience
Our trip to Poppies was very appropriate for the occasion, a quick casual meal on the go. Would we return? Absolutely and we have.

For those looking for a tasteful insight into traditional British culture, a trip to Poppies is just what you need. With throwback 1950s themed decor including a Juke Box, mini telephone box and era appropriate dressed staff; Poppies is both intriguing and inviting. Despite the lack of glitz and glamour like Catch, Poppies is still a diamond in the rough; straight to the point with cafe sized tables and rustic furnishings. This eatery is fully dependant on food quality and creating the ultimate british dining experience, which they successfully accomplish.

Thinking of going to Poppie's soon? With one in Camden and the other in Spitafields, go with 2 things in mind; a loose outfit and an empty belly. For those feeling particularly nostalgic, the bill is served in a cool mini deep fat fryer thingy-ma-jig with old school gummy sweets for your journeys!
