Gokyuzu 26 - 28 Grand Palace Green Lanes N4 1LG |
Last weekend was kick started with a surprise birthday dinner at one of the many restaurants making up North London's very own 'little Turkey’ (Hornsey Green Lanes) - Gokyuzu.
Green Lanes is full of Mediterranean restaurants that, to the uninformed eye all look the same; therefore once you've tried one, you assume you've tried them all. Having eaten at another restaurant on this same strip, which was mediocre, it was safe to say that expectations were not particularly high.
Complimentary salad |
The restaurant was big
with a separate takeaway section, which on this Friday night was very
congested. With so much hustle and bustle upon entry it did cause me to wonder whether the food here really
was worth the queues.
Amidst natural hair
conversations, I was brought over the standard complimentary cup of Turkish tea,
with lemon and sugar. The closest comparison - a less sweet Red Bush tea with
no milk.
As standard with Turkish Dining, each table was served a basket of what looks like Naan bread, accompanied by humus and a large salad. The bread was warm, thinly sliced but a little bland. Particularly hungry this evening, I ate a good few slices nonetheless before my orders arrived.

Halloumi cheese |
Recently having fallen
in love with Halloumi, I thought there was no better place to try than a Turkish Restaurant. Unfortunately, it wasn’t fried
to my liking and served little too raw - so far Gym's Kitchen does Halloumi the best.
Mains
Keeping it simple, I went for chicken wings and rice.
In essence, this sounds pretty dry especially as there was no gravy involved but
fortunately to my surprise, it was quite the opposite. A large meal for sure, I
was presented with a hot plate of 6 full chicken wings and perfectly cooked
Pilav (Turkish rice) infused with a little lemon topped with spring onion.

Overall, it was an
evening filled with informative and encouraging conversation, and food that
surpassed my expectations. The world tour continues..
